Description: This image of the Avery-Downer House in Granville, Ohio, was among the photographs produced by the Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) between 1935 and 1943. The house was built in 1842 in the Greek Revival architectural style for Alfred Avery from designs by Minard Lafever. It subsequently served as a home for the Spelman (1845-1873), Downer, and Cole families (1873-1902); and the Phi Gamma Delta (1902-1930) and Kappa Sigma (1930-1956) fraternities. Historian and antiquarian Robbins Hunter, Jr., who occupied the house from 1956 to 1979, bequeathed the house to the Licking County Historical Society. Description: Built in 1924, Swasey Chapel on the Denison University Campus was the first building in the 1917 plan for Greater Denison. The chapel was named after Cleveland trustee and amateur astronomer Dr. Ambrose Swasey, founder of the Warner and Swasey Company. The chimes in the chapel tower are a memorial for Swasey’s wife. Description: The Alligator Mound, near Granville, is a religious effigy. Alligator Mound is an effigy mound located in Granville. The mound is 200 feet long and five to six feet high at its highest point. It is located on the top of a bluff overlooking the Raccoon Creek valley. In spite of its name, the mound likely was not intended to represent an alligator. It is in the shape of a four-footed creature with a round head and a long tail that curls at the end. It resembles an opossum or a panther much more than an alligator. It may represent the Underwater Panther, a supernatural creature thought by many American Indian tribes to reside in lakes and other bodies of water. Since Alligator Mound is located so close to the Newark Earthworks, archaeologists used to think it was built by the Hopewell culture. Recent studies, however, indicate it was built by the later Fort Ancient culture. The Alligator Mound is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is owned by the Licking County Historical Society and located on the eastern outskirts of Granville, at the end of Bryn Du Drive. View on Ohio Memory.

He and his brother formed the Woods Railway Telegraph Company in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1884. Woods received 35 patents for electrical and mechanical devices between 1884 and 1907. Most of his inventions were for the improvement of the railroad system, including telegraphony, which allowed telegraph stations to send both voice and telegraph messages over a single wire. Woods is often referred to as "the Black Thomas Edison." He died in New York City in 1910. View on Ohio Memory.
